Estate planning is the process of anticipating and arranging for the disposal of one’s estate. Estate planning typically attempts to eliminate uncertainties over the administration of a probate and maximize the value of the estate by reducing taxes and other expenses. For 2011 and 2012, each US citizen can exempt $5Million of assets from federal estate tax (non US citizens may not enjoy the benefits of this exemption). There is a limited opportunity to utilize this exemption in 2011 and 2012. The exemption is scheduled to drop to $1Million for 2013 and beyond.

Being well-to-do does not preclude one from the disaster of a bad estate plan or no estate planning at all. In other words, you never know when you’re going to go, so what happens to your assets or family?

The presentation will cover estate planning strategies designed to minimize taxes: from QDOTs (Qualified Domestic Trusts) to charitable gifting and the use of Irrevocable Life Insurance Trusts, to name a few.
